Dune du Pyla, the tallest sand dune in Europe

Unhindered by the surrounding forest, the Dune of Pilat is advancing slowly but surely across the ground, and is constantly reinforced with sand from the opposite Banc d’Arguin.

In 1847, the Dune of Pilat reached a height of 76 metres. During the course of the following century right up to today, the additional sand blown over from the Banc d’Arguin has increased Pilat’s height by over 30 metres. This phenomenon is appearing to lose momentum at an increasing rate.
